History
In July 2014, club members joined together to build two boule courts. The idea came about because cricketers waiting to bat would often walk around the boundary in small groups, each with a cricket ball, throwing it towards the next boundary marker, with the closest scoring a point. Another objective was to raise funds for the cricket club’s general costs.
In the early days, many current members joined in the twice-weekly get‑togethers, supplemented by ex‑players and friends of the club. About five years ago, it was realised that two courts were insufficient, so members built a third. Two years ago, demand required a fourth and final court. All costs over the ten‑year building programme were covered by sponsorship, allowing the club to receive match fees as clear profit. Over twelve summers, boule players have generated more than £25,000 in match fees and boosted bar takings.
The Boule Club as of Summer 2025
The club now has 35 regular players who meet on Thursday evenings at 6.00 pm and Sunday mornings at 10.00 am, from early April to late October. Average attendance is around 20, with match fees of £3 per person. This brings in between £100–£120 profit per week during the season, further enhanced by bar takings and Sunday teas and coffees.
Organisers are Gary Starmer (07733361393) and Medina Bosher, supported by other generous boule players. The club often invites groups such as Ferndown Rotary Club, Horton Village, and Ferndown WI for friendly matches, which are always fun and increase bar revenue.
The Future
The sandy courts are in excellent condition, surrounded by gardens and the cricket club’s green grass. Facilities have occasionally been hired by other organisations or companies, and this is expected to expand.
The club plays under “Local Rules,” which are faster and friendlier than league competitions—similar to T20 cricket. On Thursdays and Sundays, players are split into pairs, each playing three random matches. The top two pairs then play a final for a small prize.
The group of 35 players includes many who only know each other through boule. The season extends the clubhouse’s use to seven months of the year. All equipment is provided, so newcomers simply need to make contact, turn up, learn the simple rules, and join in with a welcoming group.
We will do our best to get back to you as soon as possible.
